Appropriate investigation of sudden unexpected death.

The awful tragedy of a sudden death in a young person must not be made worse by the failure to investigate properly.  Families want to know what happened, and want to be reassured that no one else is at risk of the same thing affecting someone else in their family.  CIDG has been at the forefront here, and two of its senior members, Dr Jon Skinner and Dr Paul Morrow have written a review of the current state of the art of post mortem investigation as a guide for forensic pathologists across the world.  The first sentence contains the key point, “ Directing a thorough post mortem examination following a young sudden unexpected death is one opportunity that a forensic pathologist has to save lives”.
